Kenai Peninsula
Welcome to the Kenai Peninsula! Lovingly known as Alaska’s Playground, the
peninsula has enough outdoor activities to sustain, even the most hardcore of
adventureists, for a whole lifetime! A short 50-mile drive down the Seward Highway, a
National Scenic Byway, puts you at the front door to some of the world’s most
popular angling spots and offers access to a multitude of paddling, backcountry
camping, and intense hiking opportunities.
At the height of the summer, stop off in Seward to catch the annual 4th of July Mount
Marathon Race, where racers sprint to the top of a 3,022ft mountain only to turn
around and slide all the way back down to the finish. Veer off the Seward Highway
and onto the Sterling Highway where you’ll pass through the town of Cooper
Landing, home to world-class trophy fishing. Here, you can stop off at the Russian
River confluence, take the tram across the river, drop your line in, and potentially
reel in a 90 pound King Salmon. If hiking holds more interest for you than fishing,
you can pick up the Resurrection Trail and take it to Hope in one direction, or down
to Seward in the other.
wandering south along the highway for some unparalleled views of Cook Inlet and maybe catch a glimpse of the active volcano, Mt. Augustine, with its
steady plume of steam and smoke. The Sterling dead-ends in the charming town of Homer, where coastal life meets creativity in a wonderful display of art
galleries, coffee shops, and craft boutiques. While there, take a jaunt down the Homer Spit, a narrow piece of land jutting five miles out into Kachemak Bay.
Here, at “Lands End” you can pick up a halibut charter, take a water taxi across the bay, or whet your whistle at one of the most historically popular pubs in
Alaska.
Regardless of which direction the Seward Highway decides to takes you, know that adventure lies around each and every corner. As one of Alaska’s most
pristine and easily accessible areas, it’s easy to see just why the Kenai Peninsula has become this great state’s backyard playground.
