Kodiak & Aleutian Islands
If brown bears are your main desire for visiting the state of Alaska, then the island
of Kodiak is where you want to head. As the nations second largest island, Kodiak
is home to some 3,000+ brown bear, excellent saltwater fishing, and Alaska’s
largest seaport. Nicknamed “America’s Emerald Isle”, Kodiak’s sculpted landscape
and elaborate coastline could most definitely rival any of Ireland’s own vistas.
Exploring any of the Archipelago’s sixteen major islands will yield nothing but
feelings of remote tranquility and appreciation for such verdant and abundant
beauty.
From Kodiak Island hop on a boat and sail down Alaska’s Marine Highway through
the 300 islands that make up the Aleutian chain. Witness nature in motion as you
travel past many distinct geological formations found only in Alaska’s Ring of Fire.
Marvel over the majesty of humpback whales or the playfulness of sea otter as you
make your way from town to village, down to the southernmost city in Alaska: the
city of Unalaska. Home to the popular “Deadliest Catch” television series; Unalaska
prides itself on year-round fishing opportunities.
Take a walk through history and learn about the bombing that made this city the only place, other than Pearl Harbor, to have been attacked in WWII or
visit the Russian Orthodox Church, housing the largest collection of Russian religious artifacts. From intimate wildlife encounters to rich cultural discovery,
Kodiak Island and the hundreds of Aleutian Islands stretching between ocean and sea, are a wonderful addition to any Alaskan excursion.
